Detailed Solution

The British termed the revolt of 1857 as Sepoy Mutiny.
Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first chief administrator of India, advocated using the term "First War of Independence" to refer to the 1857 insurrection, and the Indian government agreed. In 1857, in the post town of Meerut, a sepoy insurrection broke out among the company's men. During that time, it grew into other uprisings and unorganised citizen uprisings, particularly in central India and the upper Gangetic plain, though there were also insurrection-related episodes further north and east. On April 18, the rebels were publicly humiliated at Gwalior for their disobedience, which posed a serious threat to British forces stationed there.
