The Buddhist sangha rules are mentioned in Vinaya Pitaka.
Mahavira and the Buddha both advocated the need to leave home to gain knowledge of the truth. They arranged sangha, an association of those who left their homes to stay together. Vinaya Pitaka is a book that contains the rules made for the Buddhist sangha. The book mentions that there were separate branches in the sangha for men and women. All men could join the sangha simply by their will. However, the sangha rules asked children to take the permission of their parents and enslaved people of their masters. Women had to take approval from their husbands. People who worked for the king required his permission, and debtors that of creditors.
