Detailed Solution

The Canal Colonies were the areas irrigated by the new canals.
To transform the semi-desert wastes into fertile agricultural lands for export, a network of irrigation canals was built by the British in India. The irrigation canals made the soil fertile, which was used to grow rice and wheat. Subsequently, this wheat and rice were exported by the British. Around the region where irrigation canals were set up, peasants started settling down, and later this area came to be known as canal colonies. The parts of western Punjab which were brought under cultivation through the construction of canals came to be known as Punjab Canal Colonies.
