The candidate who gets the highest number of votes from a constituency to the legislature of a State Government becomes the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the constituency. The voters of a constituency elect an MLA to the legislature of a State government. These elected MLAs become part of the Legislative Assembly and may also form the government. The candidate should be an Indian citizen, over 25 years of age, and should not be sentenced to one or more years of imprisonment. These are similar to the qualifications required to become an MP as well.
