Detailed Solution

The capital city of Belgium, Brussels, accounts for 20% of the Dutch-speaking
population. 59 per cent of the Belgian population live in the Flemish region and speak Dutch, 40 per cent live in the Wallonia region and speak French and the remaining one per cent talk in German. The French-speaking minority was relatively rich and powerful compared to the Dutch-speaking majority, which led to friction between the two communities during the 1950s and 60s. The Belgian capital, Brussels, presented a unique problem as the Dutch-speaking community was only a minority, with 20 per cent of the people. 80 per cent of people spoke French there. Thus, tensions were more intense in Brussels.
