Detailed Solution

The Catholic Church was favoured by Austria and Spain in the 19th century. The European states were bound by the shackles of religion. The states usually discriminated in favour of one religion and sidelined the others. Religious tolerance was not a feature of European states at that time. An example of this case was Britain which discriminately favoured the Church of England. Similar to this was the case of the European countries Austria and Spain, which favoured the Catholic Church. This lack of religious tolerance was challenged by the liberals who wanted a nation which tolerated all religions.
