The change in the focal length of an eye lens is caused by the action of the ciliary muscles.
The ciliary muscles can contract and increase the curvature of the lens so that the lens thickens. The expanded curvature of the lens permits the eye to focus on a nearby item. However, when one needs to look at a faraway object, the muscle tissues loosen up, and the focus of the lens changes to an item further away.
