The Chauri Chaura incident occurred at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district of the United Provinces on February 4 1922. Mahatma Gandhi halted the Non-Cooperation movement due to an unfortunate incident at Chauri Chaura. On February 4, over 2500 protestors marched to the Chauri Chaura market to picket a booze store. When the mob's leader was detained, they marched to the police station and demanded his release. Police fired rounds into the air in an attempt to evacuate the gathering.
