The Chauri Chaura incident took place in Gorakhpur in February 1922. Because of this incident, Gandhiji decided to call off the Non-Cooperation Movement since it had turned violent. At Chauri-Chaura in Gorakhpur, a peaceful demonstration turned into a violent protest which killed 20 police officers. Gandhiji felt that the satyagrahis needed to be trained properly before a mass struggle and even felt that prolonged mass struggle was very tiring for the common people and even Congress leaders.
