The chemical formula of nitrogen oxide is NO.
The oxidation state for N in nitrogen oxide is +2 whereas for oxygen it is -2. In the cris-cross method, oxidation state of cation is written in subscript of anion and vice versa irrespective of its charge. If we apply this for the given cation and anion, then the formula is

N_{2} O_{2}

but we divide the subscript value by 2. Hence, the formula will be NO.
