Detailed Solution

The chief justice of India is appointed by the President.
According to Article 124(2) of the Constitution, the Chief Justice of India is chosen by the President of India. When appointing new judges, the President meets with additional Supreme Court and High Court justices. The chief justice is the presiding or senior judge of a court of justice. The retiring CJI suggests his replacement as CJI. The Union Law Minister passes the recommendation along to the Prime Minister, who subsequently counsels the President. NV Ramana serves as India's chief justice at the moment.
