The Chinese rulers sent gifts of silk to Iran and west Asia rulers. Silk was considered one of the most important commodities due to its rich texture and gloss colours. Making silk was a complicated process as it involved the extraction of raw silk from the cocoons of silkworms, and then this extraction was spun into thread and woven into cloth. The technique of making silk was first invented in China around 7000 years ago. The Chinese often gifted silk to allied countries and the knowledge of silk spread further west.
