The Chipko movement is a result of an effort to end the alienation of people from the forests. It originated in a remote village called Reni in Garhwal, high up in the Himalayas during the 1970s. This movement is also known as the 'Hug the trees Movement' due to the people of Reni clasped the tree trunks preventing the workers from cutting the trees.
