Detailed Solution

The Church extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants.
In France, three estates made up the society: the First Estate (clergy), the Second Estate (nobility), and the Third Estate (commoners). A key difference between the estates was the burden of taxes. The nobles and clergy were mostly excluded from paying taxes, while the ordinary people faced direct taxes that were disproportionately high. Hence peasants were obligated to serve the lord by working in his fields and residence, serving in the military, and building roads. However, after the Church withheld its just share of taxes from the peasants, known as tithes, all third estate members were ultimately forced to pay taxes to the state.
