Detailed Solution

The Church extracted its share of taxes from the peasants called Tithes. Louis XVI was an autocratic ruler, and his reign was marked by harsh measures imposed on the members of the third estate, especially the peasants. Only a few of them owned a piece of land, and about 60% was owned by the nobles, the Church and other wee-off members of the Third Estate. In the Third Estates, the working class bore the burden of paying taxes and enjoyed little or no privilege. These growing inequalities among the various sections of society sparked the fire of revolt.
