Detailed Solution

The circumstances that led to the subsistence crises in France were an increase in demand for food grains due to population growth, an increase in bread prices, and fixed wages for labourers by owners.
The rapid population growth from 23 million to 28 million in France between the years 1715 to 1789 gradually led to the increase in demand for food grains in the country. This led to the increase in the price of bread which was the staple diet of the French people. Workers and labourers also could not cope  with the fixed wages given by their owners, and high rates of everything made living difficult.
This eventually widened the gap between the rich and the poor. Things also became worse whenever
drought and hail hit the harvest. All these circumstances led to the subsistence crises in France.
