The city of Surat had a plague scare in 1994. The 1994 plague in India was an outbreak of bubonic and pneumonic Plague in southwestern and central India from August 1994 to October 1994. This Plague infected around 700 people, and approx 60 were reported as killed due to the disease. The most affected areas were Maharashtra, Surat (Gujarat), Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, New Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh. The main reason for this Plague is still unknown. The central government formed a committee to investigate the cause of this Plague, and it submitted its report ‘The Plague Epidemic of 1994’ and concluded the disease was a plague. Still, the origin of it was not identified. There was massive destruction in economic terms too. The city of Surat was estimated to be damaged economically, which was worth Rs. 816 crores. Tourism was affected a lot during the Plague.
