The city of Surat had a plague scare in 1994. One of the dirtiest cities in India was Surat. It was particularly challenging for sweepers to gather and move the waste into designated dumps because homes, hotels, and restaurants would throw their trash into the nearest drain or roadway. Additionally, the Municipal Corporation did not collect the trash as frequently as it should have, which made matters worse. People who have the plague must be kept in isolation because it spreads through the air. Over 300,000 residents of Surat fled the city, and several people died there. The threat of the disease forced the Municipal Corporation to thoroughly sanitise the city.
