The civil disobedience movement saw the active participation of women for the first time.
The large-scale participation of women was a significant component of the Civil Disobedience Movement. Thousands of ladies came out of their homes to listen to Gandhiji during his salt march. They marched in protest, made salt, and picketed foreign fabric and liquor stores. Many people were imprisoned. These women were from high-caste families in cities and rich peasant families in rural areas. They came to regard service to the nation as a holy obligation of women after being moved by Gandhiji's message. However, this increasing public participation did not necessarily imply a radical shift in how women's positions were perceived.
