Detailed Solution

The civil disobedience movement was launched because Lord Irwin ignored Gandhi’s eleven demands. Lord Irwin's defiance of Mahatma Gandhi's eleven demands, which included the repeal of the salt tax, sparked the civil disobedience movement. In a sense, Mahatma Gandhi's letter served as a demand. The letter warned that if the requests were not met by March 11th, Congress will begin a campaign of civil disobedience. Irwin refused to compromise. Thus, Mahatma Gandhi and 78 of his trusted volunteers began the well-known salt march. The beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement was marked by the "salt march."
