The collapse of the Ottoman empire initiated nationalism in the Balkan states. The inhabitants of the regions that the Balkans consisted of were known as Slaves. The situation became very unstable when the feeling of nationalism started spreading. The Ottoman empire strengthened itself through modernisation and internal reforms in order to control the situation but everything was in vain. Its European nations, gradually, separated and they fought for its independence and political rights. Slavic nationalities got into severe clashes to expand their territories and to impose their superiority on each other which made the Balkan area an area of conflict. An intense rivalry was going on between the European powers over trade, colonies as well as naval and military during this period.
