Detailed Solution

In an elastic collision of two billiard balls, the total energy is conserved.
In an elastic collision, there is no loss of energy and therefore the kinetic energy and momentum of the two balls before and after the collision are conserved. Even gas atoms and molecules at room temperature keep on colliding with each other. In some collisions, the momentum of the system is conserved, but the kinetic energy is not conserved while in some collisions, both the momentum and kinetic energy of the system are conserved. When two billiard balls collide elastically, then their velocity of separation is equal to the velocity of the approach. Similarly, in an inelastic collision of two bodies, the velocity of approach is less than the velocity of separation. In a perfectly inelastic collision of two bodies, the velocity of separation becomes zero.
