Detailed Solution

The colonial government gave vast areas of forests to European planters. The colonial government cleared forests in India to satisfy their needs. Firstly, they wanted to expand cultivation to meet the growing demand for food grains for the urban population and commercial crops such as sugar, jute, and cotton in Europe for industrial production. There was an increase of 6.7 million hectares in the cultivated area between 1880 and 1920. The British also wanted to make room for coffee, tea, and rubber plantations in the forests.
