Detailed Solution

During colonial times, the law was arbitrary. This means that it often functioned as per the whims and fancies of the rulers and there weren't standard definitions and procedures. Some examples of arbitrary colonial laws are the Sedition Act of 1870 and the Rowlatt Act of 1919. The Sedition Act defined the term "sedition" in a very broad manner, thus allowing the government to arrest anyone who criticized them. Similarly, the Rowlatt Act gave power to the government to imprison people without any proper trial.
