Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining bone density by inhibiting bone resorption (breakdown) and promoting bone formation. When oestrogen levels decrease, such as during menopause or with certain medical conditions or treatments, the balance between bone resorption and formation is disrupted. As a result, bone resorption may exceed bone formation, leading to a decrease in bone density and an increased risk of osteoporosis, a condition characterised by fragile and porous bones prone to fracture.
