Detailed Solution

The standard method used to estimate the poverty line in India is based on Income and Consumption levels. The poverty line is an imaginary line estimated by the government from time to time, which is a valuable measure to assess poverty. There are two ways this can be calculated, income and consumption. The minimum levels of consumption are taken that are necessary for survival. The ‘minimum’ food requirement of people in rural and urban areas is estimated in calories; if a person consumes less than this level, they are considered poor.
