Detailed Solution

The Communist Party of India split in 1964. This split occurred because of ideological differences between the members of the CPI. In the 1960s, when the relations between India and USSR were improving then, the USSR’s government which was made up of communists, told the communists in India, i.e. the CPI, to join hands with Jawaharlal Nehru’s party, which was in power at that time. But some members of the CPI opposed this proposal of alliance with the Congress party of Nehru; thus, an ideological rift occurred within the CPI. Finally, in 1964 CPI got divided between CPI and CPI (M), where the former supported the opinion of the USSR and joined hands with Nehru’s party, while the latter remained out of this alliance and exercised as an opposition party.
