Detailed Solution

The majority Sinhalese community discriminated against the Srilankan Tamils. In 1956, the Sinhala language was recognised as the only official language of the nation, thus neglecting the Srilankan Tamils and their culture. The government implemented policies to favour the Sinhala community regarding university admissions and government jobs. A new constitution came into being that declared the duty of the state to protect and foster ‘Buddhism’. It became the official religion of the country. All these endeavours shown by the government made the Tamil community feel separated and discriminated against by the Sinhalas.
