The company started interfering in the internal matters of Indian states through Residents. It was a strategy of the East India Company to send residents to each state's ruler. This was because the British wanted to keep information about every state to know all the activities of the Indian states. Britishers did not wish the Indian states to keep their relations friendly and harmonious because it was unfavourable to the Britishers. So British residents began interfering in the internal affairs of states, attempting to bind them to agree with British decisions for Britishers to annex their states easily.
