Detailed Solution

The complainant has the right to legally get a free copy of the FIR from the police. Only after the registration of an FIR, or First Investigation Report, can the police begin their investigations into a crime. There is a prescribed form, which is signed by the complainant, in which the police register an FIR. It is compulsory for an officer in charge of a police station to register an FIR by law whenever someone gives information about a cognizable or punishable offence. This information can be given orally or in writing to the police. The FIR notes the name and address of the complainant. It cites the date, time and place that the offence has occurred, and elaborates the basic facts- containing a detailing of the events of the crime. The identity of the accused persons and witnesses are also mentioned if such details are available.
