The concept of dhamma was brought to light by king Ashoka. Dhamma is a Prakrit term for the Sanskrit word Dharma. It did not involve worship of God or animal sacrifice. By introducing the concept of Dhamma, Ashoka aimed to spread more kindness, charity and tolerance. He wanted to solve the problem of religious conflict, discrimination against slaves, quarrels and arguments between his subjects, disrespect towards different religions, etc., using dhamma.
