Under Jawaharlal Nehru's leadership, the Lahore Congress formalised the demand for "Purna Swaraj" or complete independence, for India in December 1929."Go back Simon" was shouted by the angry protesters when the Simon Commission arrived in India in 1928. All parties, including the Muslim League and the Congress, took part in the protests. Progressively losing their influence were the liberals and moderates who advocated for a constitutional order within the confines of British dominion. It was decided that January 26, 1930, would be observed as Independence Day and that on this day, people would swear to fight for unrestricted independence.
