In 1907, the Congress split. The Congress split at the Surat session in 1907 is also known as the Surat Split. The reason for the split was the moderates' opposition to boycotts as a form of protest in the Swadeshi Movement. The moderates opposed boycotts because they involved the use of force, whereas the radicals supported boycotts. Following the split, the Congress was dominated by the Moderates, with Tilak's supporters operating from the outside. The two groups reunited in December 1915. The Congress and the Muslim League signed the historic Lucknow Pact the following year, agreeing to work together for representative government in the country.
