Detailed Solution

The Congress split into moderates and Extremists. Extremism in the Indian National Congress was sparked by the partition of Bengal and the National Congress's ineffectiveness as a political force. The supporters of the Congress were split into two camps: the extremists and the moderates. Rash Bihari Ghosh, a moderate, was elected president of INC in Surat (1907). The fundamentalists, however, urged that Lala Lajpat Rai or Bal Gangadhar Tilak take the presidency. The tug of war between these two parties became increasingly evident at the Surat conference. In 1907, the Indian National Congress ultimately broke apart. While the radicals supported boycotts, the moderates believed they constituted the use of force in the Swadeshi movement.
