The conservative forces successfully suppressed the Liberal movements in 1848. But they soon realised that the strengthening of the traditional institutions, such as monarchy, can be done through modernisation and returning to the pre-revolutionary days of the society was not required. This resulted in a state power that was more effective and stronger. The autocratic monarchies of central and eastern Europe began to introduce the changes in 1848 that were already in force in western Europe before 1815. So, the system of serfdom and bonded labour were abolished in the Habsburg dominions and Russia. France lost the territories it had taken over under Napoleon and the Bourbon dynasty got its power back.
