The Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950.
The constitution is called a living document. The public declaration was made by the then leaders of Independent India and the day was observed as Republic Day. On this day, India became a republic with the Constitution of India coming into effect. Indian constitution is the longest written constitution in the world. This was done with an effort of about 300 members of the Constituent Assembly who met and discussed each and every clause of the Constitution, enabling the document to come into effect.
