The Constitution of India divided the power between central and state government into three lists.
The legislative powers of India are divided into three lists by the Constitution - the Union List, the State List and the Concurrent list. Thus the Union list has subjects of national importance, such as defence, foreign affairs, banking, and currency. Meanwhile, the State list includes state and local importance issues such as police, trade, commerce, agriculture and irrigation. The Concurrent list includes subjects of common interest to the Union and state governments, such as education, trade unions, marriage, adoption and succession. The Union government has the final saying in case of any conflicts in the law-making of these subjects.
