India has a federal system of government. To ensure coordination among the various levels of government and divide their powers, the Constitution of India mentions their areas of jurisdiction in the form of three lists. These are named the "Union List," "State List," and "Concurrent List." The Central government has the sole authority to make laws on the subjects that fall under the Union List, whereas the rules on the subjects that fall under the State List are made solely by the State governments. Both governments can make laws for subjects falling under the concurrent list. If there is any clash between the laws made by the central and state governments, the laws made by the central government surpass the latter.
