Detailed Solution

The Constitution was amended to include an Anti-defection law to prevent elected MPs from changing parties.
India is a multi-party democracy. Therefore, many parties compete against each other to win elections and form their government. Even after getting elected, members of Parliament or State Legislative Assemblies used to keep on switching their parties for the lure of getting ministerial posts in the government. It is known as defection. 52nd amendment Act, 1985, was made to introduce a provision for the anti-defection law to reduce the misconduct of defection. The anti-defection law specified punishing those legislators who leave the parties through which they were elected. This punishment was about taking back their membership. The anti-defection law has controlled the issue of defection to a certain extent.
