Saheli contains the non-steroidal drug centchroman (ormeloxifene), which is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It has anti-oestrogenic effect in the uterus. It blocks oestrogen receptors in the uterus and prevents implantation. It causes the lining of the uterus to build more slowly and speeds the transport of any fertilized egg through the fallopian tubes more quickly. In some parts of the body, such as bones, it has oestrogenic action (acts like oestrogen).

(2) Saheli does not inhibit ovulation. It prevents implantation by causing an asynchrony between ovulation and the development of the uterine lining.

(3) Saheli is an oral contraceptive pill. It is not an IUD.

(4) Saheli is not a post-coital (emergency) contraceptive.
