The creation of Pakistan was the result of communal politics. The failure of two major religions, Hindu and Muslim, to coexist led to the division of India and Pakistan. But this division never really achieved the desired peace. Pakistan was founded as a Muslim state; hence religion plays a significant part in its political development. The pre-partition and post-partition phases of this position can be divided into two categories. Islam was employed as an effective tool of political mobilisation in the run-up to partition to obtain a Muslim state. However, after the political goal of nationhood was achieved, the leadership's reliance on religion began to fade. As a result of communal politics, Pakistan was born.
