The credit for the discovery of electrons and protons goes to J.J. Thomson and Rutherford.
Thomson was the first to propose in 1897 that one of the fundamental units was more than 1,000 times smaller than an atom, thereby introducing the electron as a subatomic particle. Thomson discovered this while researching the properties of cathode rays. Ernest Rutherford discovered the proton, a positively charged subatomic particle, in 1917. He demonstrated that the nucleus of a hydrogen atom (a proton) exists in the nuclei of all other atoms.
