Detailed Solution

The Criminal Tribes Act was passed in 1871.
In the nineteenth century, the British government enacted several laws to expand its control over India's resources and revenue basket. One such law that helped them gain greater control was the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. This act considered the mobile, nomadic pastoralists criminals by nature and by birth. As a result, the communities were allowed to settle in particular notified village settlements. However, they were placed under the control of village police, who kept a continuous watch on the movement of the pastoralists. Moreover, the action was restricted by the grant of permits that nomads had to seek to move in or out of the villages.
