The current anti-poverty strategy by the government is based on the promotion of economic growth and targeted anti-poverty programs.
Removing poverty has been one of the main aims of Indian developmental plans. The current anti-poverty plans of the government are dependent broadly on two concepts, (1) promotion of economic growth and (2) targeted anti-poverty programs. Over thirty years ending in the early eighties, there was meagre per capita income growth and a slight decline in poverty. Official poverty values, around 45 per cent in the early 1950s, continued to be the same even in the early eighties. However, since the eighties, India’s economic development has been one of the most rapid in the world. The growth rate rose from an average of about 3.5 per cent a year in the 1970s to around 6 per cent during the 1980s and 1990s. The ever-growing rise in growth rates has aided significantly in the decline of poverty. Thus, it is more apparent that there is a crucial link between economic development and poverty decline.
