The removal of poverty has been one of the main aims of the Indian developmental strategy. The current anti-poverty plan of the government is dependent broadly on two concepts (1) promotion of economic growth and (2) targeted anti-poverty programs. Over a time of thirty years ending up to the early eighties, there was a little rise in per capita income and not much decline in poverty. Official poverty measures of around 45 per cent in the early 1950s continued to be the same even in the early eighties. Since the eighties, India’s economic development has been one of the fastest in the world. The growth rate rose from an average of around 3.5 per cent per year in the 1970s to about 6 per cent during the 1980s and 1990s. The high growth rates have assisted gradually in the fall of poverty. Thus, it is clear that there is a tough link between economic development and poverty reduction.
