Detailed Solution

The Dandi March was launched in 1930. On February 5, headlines stated that Gandhi would commence civil disobedience by breaking the salt rules. The salt satyagraha would begin on March 12 and last on April 6 at Dandi, with Gandhi violating the Salt Act. On March 12, 1930, Gandhi and 80 satyagrahis set off on foot for the seaside village of Dandi, Gujarat, 390 kilometres (240 miles) from their starting point at Sabarmati Ashram. Thousands of satyagrahis and leaders joined him, including Sarojini Naidu. Every day, more people joined the march until the procession of marchers stretched for at least two kilometres. Finally, on April 5, Gandhi arrived at the beach. He produced a lump of salty mud the following day and said, "With this, I am shaking the foundations of the British Empire." He then cooked it in seawater, resulting in the production of illicit salt. He urged his hundreds of followers to start manufacturing salt along the shoreline "wherever it is convenient" and to teach villagers how to make illegal but vital salt.
