The death of Potti Sriramulu sparked violent protests in the former Madras Presidency. The government had to divide the territory and form the state of Andhra on a linguistic basis. There was regional separatism in India when it got independence. People demanded the reorganisation of states based on language. Andhra Pradesh was being demanded as a Telugu-speaking region. Sriramulu, for the same cause, has taken fast unto death. However, he died after 56 days of the hunger strike. He is referred to as the Founding Father of Andhra Pradesh and is considered an Amarjeevi for his self-sacrifice.
