The death of Potti Sriramulu triggered such tumultuous protests that the government was compelled to accede to the demand for the creation of the Andhra state. To defend the interests of Telugu speakers, a veteran Gandhian named Potti Sriramulu embarked on a hunger strike in October 1952. He demanded the creation of the Andhra state. The fast gained a lot of support as it continued. In numerous towns, hartals and bandhs were seen. Potti Sriramulu passed away on December 15th, 1952, fifty-eight days into his fast. According to a newspaper, "the news of Sriramulu's death wrapped all Andhra in turmoil." The central government was compelled to comply with the demand because of how extensive and ferocious the protests were. As a result, the newly created state of Andhra, later known as Andhra Pradesh, was established on October 1st, 1953.
