Detailed Solution

The demand for indigo increased in late eighteenth-century Britain because of industrialisation.
When Britain started to industrialise, its cotton production dramatically increased, leading to a vast increase in the demand for fabric colours. Indigo supplies from the West Indies and America declined for several reasons as demand for the dye rose. Global indigo production decreased by 50% between 1783 and 1789. British cloth dyers were now scrambling to find new indigo supply sources. The British turned to India for their share of the indigo supply, which could fill the increasing demand gap by producing the plant in the subcontinent.
