The demand for 'Poona Swaraj' was voiced in the Lahore session. A Congress session was convened in Lahore in December 1929 with Pandit Nehru as the President. It proclaimed Purna Swaraj as the ultimate goal of Indians. Congress approved a proposal for total independence. Congress was determined to observe January 26, 1930, as Independence Day or Poorna Swaraj Day. Nehru hoisted the Indian tricolour flag on the banks of the Ravi river.
